Call it a hat trick: Opus One knocks it out of the park with three excellent, if very different, takes on the the last string of vintages: 2015, 20. This a very decadent expression of Opus One with a provocatively effortless harmoniousness that is truly difficult to resist. Full-bodied, super concentrated and packed with black and blue fruits, the palate is built like a brick house with firm, ripe, finely grained tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Very deep purple-black, the nose reveals profound notions of chocolate-covered cherries, crème de cassis, blueberry compote and licorice with touches of tobacco, cedar chest, Sichuan pepper, eucalyptus and violets. Lisa Perrotti: Brown for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate : A blend of 77.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1.5% Malbec, the Opus One 2016 Proprietary Red Wine was recently bottled in July and August 2018. Needs at least three to five years to come together. Full-bodied yet linear and very refined with a very persistent finish.

James Suckling:Fantastic aromas that are complex and complete with blackcurrants, blueberries and herbs, such as basil and bay leaf. Harmonious and lively, the flavors linger to create an enduring finish with touches of dark chocolate and espresso.Ĭomposition:Cabernet Sauvignon 77%, Petit Verdot 8%, Merlot 8%, Cabernet Franc 5%, and Malbec 2% Juicy flavors of black cherry, blackberry and cassis flood the palate and creamy, fine-grained tannins deliver a delightfully round structure. The initial bouquet is augmented by more nuanced notes of sage, rosemary, and black olive. The 2016 Opus One is remarkably elegant and bright offering sumptuous aromas of fresh red and blue fruit, baking spices and vanilla, and a delicate fragrance of spring florals. Built for elegance rather than power, it epitomizes the potential of Napa to produce wines of polish, refinement and elegance, even in an environment where power is valued more.

Out in the Opus One vineyards, winemaker Michael Silacci (who has been at the winery for over two decades) begins tasting grapes rather early in order to pinpoint the perfect harvest date. The harvest began on the 9 th of September under mild conditions and was completed in just 33 days on October 12. In August, perfect conditions for ripening the grapes continued up until the harvest, with a temperature spike in early September. Nevertheless, the Oakville AVA received 28 inches of rain, most of it just in time for bud break in March. The 2016 vintage at Opus One was the fifth consecutive vintage characterized by intense drought conditions in Northern California. The Opus One vineyards are planted with classic Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The grapes from here are blended with fruit from the River and Ballestra Pacels, forming 70 acres that surround the Opus One winery. The first two parcels form the world-renowned To-Kalon vineyard, measuring roughly 100 acres in total. The 2016 Opus One is produced from four different parcels situated in the western region of the Oakville AVA in Napa Valley, California. The legendary Opus One wine brand was created in the 1970’s through a merger between two visionary individuals: Baron Philippe de Rothschild (owner of the famous Pauillac First Growth Chateau Mouton-Rothschild ) and Robert Mondavi (an iconic American wine producer whose namesake wine empire stretches across California).
